Organizational Sketch: The Cherokee Garden Club was organized in 1937 by gardeners living on Cherokee Street in Dothan, Alabama.  The club was once a member of the Dothan Federation of Garden Clubs, but left the when the requirements no longer matched the interests of the Cherokee Garden Club.  The club's goals are to promote an interest in gardening, civic beautification and planting, to protect wild flowers, trees and birds, and to share plant and gardening knowledge in order to encourage neighborly spirits and be involved in one another's gardens.  [Sources: Cherokee Garden Club Constitution, Article II (see Membership Directories, Constitution, & Programs) & History of the Cherokee Garden Club by Rosa Thomas]

Scope / Content Note: Contains yearly programs - which includes a list of members, the club's constitution and by-laws, and meeting dates; meeting minutes, 1959-97; correspondence, 1979-2000; newspaper clippings; a history of the Cherokee Garden Club compiled by Rosa Thomas; a Dothan Federation of Garden Clubs program, 1961-1962; a songbook with six scores by Addie Anderson Wilson and information on Smyrna Baptist Church and the Smyrna Home & Garden Club including newspaper articles, a church history, minutes from the Dawsey Reunion and a list of donors to the memorial fund. It's possible that members of the Symrna Home & Garden Club were also members the Cherokee Garden Club.  File order imposed by the WA staff.
