About the Center

The JWS Center for Student Success at Troy University is dedicated to supporting student success through a wide range of programs and services. Our mission is to foster academic achievement, personal and social development, career readiness, and active engagement in both campus life and the broader community. We offer academic support to promote retention and timely graduation, while also equipping students with essential skills for academic and lifelong success. The Center plays a key role in helping students transition into the TROY community by providing orientation to university resources, policies, and culture. As a comprehensive support unit, the JWS Center encourages a deeper appreciation for higher education and cultivates meaningful connections among students, faculty, and staff. Through our initiatives, we aim to enrich students' academic journeys and prepare them for lifelong success.

JWS Services

Academic Advising

The advisors in the JWS Center help with much more than simply choosing classes, adjusting to university life as a first year student, or helping students choose a major, our advisors work to ensure that each student performs well both in and out of the classroom.

Adaptive Needs

Troy University, under the guidelines of Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973, makes reasonable accommodations for documented physical and mental limitations of otherwise-qualified individuals with disabilities.

Career Services

Our office provides high-quality career services to help students choose majors, explore career interests, find internships, and guide their job search. These helpful resources are available to all TROY students.

Civic Engagement

Civic and community engagement is an integral part of every student's college experience. The Office of Civic Engagement provides students opportunities to make a difference in our local community while applying knowledge acquired in the classroom to develop skills in civic action and service.

Assessments and Computer Lab

The Testing and Assessment Center (TAC), located in the Center for Student Success, is responsible for providing students with a testing environment where tests can be administered accurately and securely. Students may report to the TAC to take their ACCUPLACER Placement Test and other assessments geared around first-year students. These computerized tests are for students to identify the appropriate starting level for English and Math courses. After a student completes the ACCUPLACER test, he/she will be provided a score report with his/her appropriate course requirement listed. To access study materials visit https://studentportal.accuplacer.org.

Learning Center

The Learning Center offers free tutoring, study groups, and peer academic skills coaching for Troy University enrolled students. We provide trained peer tutors who work with students to develop academic skills in writing, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, basic statistics, and general studies science classes. Tutors work one-to-one or in small group settings to help learners with topics in a range of subjects and all types of writing at any stage of the process. (In 2019, we supported over 100 different courses at TROY!)

Trojan Pantry

The Trojan Pantry at Troy University is a student-focused resource working to end food insecurity on the Troy Campus. Operated by the Office of Civic Engagement, the pantry provides free access to nonperishable food, hygiene products, and basic school supplies for all enrolled students. With nearly one-third of students facing food insecurity, the Trojan Pantry plays a key role in supporting student success and well-being. Through partnerships with local food banks and campus-wide initiatives like “Tins for Troy,” the pantry continues to grow its impact and foster a stronger, more supportive Trojan community.

Welcome to the John W. Schmidt Center for Student Success!

At Troy University, student success is more than a goal—it's our mission. The John W. Schmidt Center for Student Success (or the JWS Center, as we call it) is where that mission comes to life. Whether you're just starting out as a first-year student or preparing to launch your career, we're here to support you every step of the way. From tutoring in English, math, and science, to academic advising and career counseling, we've got you covered. Students can even use our Center services to engage in meaningful ways to give back—like helping reduce hunger and poverty right here in our local community. And that's just the beginning. The JWS Center is home to ten different areas, all focused on helping you thrive.

We're located in Eldridge Hall, and I like to think of the Center as the campus's “kitchen table.” Growing up, the kitchen table is often where homework gets completed, advice is given, stories are shared, and support is given. That's exactly the kind of space we've created here—a place where you can feel seen, heard, and empowered.

So come visit us and find out all the ways you can thrive as a Troy University student. Follow us on social media for helpful tips, updates, and inspiration.

And remember—you don't need to have a problem to stop by. We believe in partnering with students to fulfill a shared promise: that engaged, successful students create a brighter future for everyone and in return make their lives and their university stronger.

See you soon at the JWS Center—where student success meets heart and integrity.
