Preliminary Guide to the Dothan Harmony Club Records (ca. 1911-1981)

Record Group 166

Date Span:  1911-1984

Extent:  ca. 3 cu ft.

Organizational Sketch:  The Dothan Harmony Club was organized in 1909 with the mission of "studying music in all its forms and cultivating musical talent." [Club Constitution, Article II].  It appears to have affiliated with the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs in 1916 but this is unconfirmed as of 3/6/2018. [Source is annual program, 1916-1917].

Scope/Content:  Documents the club's existence and activities.  Includes scrapbooks and photographs, musical scores and books, magazines, annual programs, correspondence, governing documents, meeting minutes, financial records.

Organized into 5 series:

  1. Series 1: Operational Records, 1911-1984, 16 file folders: Governing documents, project and event files, correspondence, annual programs

  2. Series 2: Scrapbooks and Photographs, 1920s-1980 (bulk 1958-1980), 10 items: Panorama photograph of club in 1920s, a modern photo album, and eight scrapbooks of photos and newspaper clippings.

  5. Series 5: Periodicals, 1955, 2 items: One commemorative anniversary program and one issue of a club magazine.

Provenance:  Dothan's Houston-Love Memorial Library stored club records but turned them over to the Wiregrass Archives when the Library moved its operations.

Processing Note (as of 03/06/2018):  Some items boxed with other collections sent from Houston-Love Library, so parameters of collection inferred by Wiregrass Archives staff.  Arrangement imposed by Wiregrass Archives staff.  Duplicates of annual programs and musical scores discarded (two retained for archival purposes).  Blank forms discarded.
