Biographical Sketch William F. "Bill" Church is a long-time resident of Dothan, Alabama. He is very
interested in and knowledgeable about the history of the city and area.
Scope Approximately 180 photographic prints taken by Quay Fortner, a Dothan real estate
and insurance business owner as well as member of the City of Dothan Planning Commission,
of the city's Southside neighborhood. Dated
March 1958. Property was being assessed for sale in a slum clearance / urban renewal
plan that relocated ca. 175 African American and 5 white families. Images include
houses, businesses, churches, vacant lots, street scenes, automobiles, and occasionally
adults and children.
Organization Images numbered in pencil on reverse. Arranged in order of those numbers. Some
numbers are missing.
Provenance Bill Church prevented one of Quay Fortner's relatives, who was cleaning out his
former home, from tossing these images into the burn pit. Unclear why Fortner retained
these photos.
Processing Notes Pictures scanned by The Wiregrass Archives staff. Numbered on back of each print
by persons unknown; The Wiregrass Archives staff retained those numbers and arranged
images accordingly.

March 1958. Depicts property for tax purposes. Images include houses, businesses,
churches, vacant lots, street scenes, automobiles, and occasionally adults and children.
