Guide to the Doug Snellgrove Collection, 1909 – 1997

Extent: 4768 photographic slides, negatives, positives, and prints.

Biographical Sketch: Joseph Douglas "Doug" Snellgrove (April 4, 1919 – September 7, 1990) was a semi-professional photographer who created a visual record of Southeast Alabama and Southwest Georgia in the 1960s through 1980s. He was particularly interested in color photography of flowers and black-and-white photography of rural lifeways. He made many photographs of rural tourist attractions, such as Westville in Lumpkin, Georgia, and Landmark Park near Dothan, Alabama.

Mr. Snellgrove was a World War II Army veteran, and worked for the US Postal Service from 1958 until his retirement in 1978. Born in Chancellor, AL, Snellgrove was a lifelong resident of Dothan, AL, and a member of the Cloverdale United Methodist Church. His immediate family included wife Cathlene Napier Snellgrove, son Steve Snellgrove (d. 1973), and daughter Jennifer Snellgrove Buie.

Scope / Content: Collection contains black & white(B&W) and color negatives, unmounted color transparencies (positive film), standard sized prints are 8 in x10 in and smaller, mounted color transparencies (slides) are 1.5 in. x 1.5 in. and 2.75 in. x 2.75 in., and oversized (O/S) prints are 11 in x14 in and larger. Topics include nature scenes such as animals, birds, insects, reptiles, flowers, landscapes, trees and waterways; various locales such as parks and museums; historical sites such as old barns, homesteads, outbuildings and storefronts; people in various roles, posed and not posed; and miscellaneous images covering agriculture, airplanes, architecture, postcards, railroads, antique cars, buildings, graves, and similar topics. Slides and oversized items are housed separately.

Organization: Organized into 5 series:

Series 1: Historical/Pioneer [428 photographs]: Explores old homesteads and barns. Arranged by format.

Series 2: People [406 photographs]: Explores different views of people, focusing on hands, posed shots, and people in everyday life. Arranged alphabetically by topic, then by image format.

Series 3: Places [1144 photographs]: Covers Alabama (particularly Dothan), Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, other states, and Switzerland. Arranged alphabetically by topic, then by image format.

Series 4: Nature [1973 photographs]: Explores animals, birds, insects, reptiles, plants, landscapes, trees, waterways, swamps, and similar topics. Arranged alphabetically by topic, then by image format.

Series 5: Miscellaneous [793 photographs]: Covers agriculture, antique cars, buildings & houses, forms & shapes, NASA/airplanes, railroad, and other similar topics. Arranged alphabetically by topic, then by image format.

Processing Notes: Acquired in accessions 099-10-0130 and 099-16-0711 (these appear in the File IDs in the inventory). Slides were removed from slide carousels and arranged by topic as determined by WA staff. Slides noted as "Judy" or "Cathlene" were left separate from the rest of the slides in the accession. Prints were sorted into three sizes for housing: letter size (8.5 in. x 11 in. and smaller), large prints (approx. 9.5 in. x 12 in.) and oversize prints (12 in. x 13 in. and larger).
