Historical Sketch: The Carr family owned property in Elamville, Alabama, a small community in Barbour County between Ariton and Clio. T. Florence, his wife Irene, and brother, Ellis are buried at nearby Holmes Baptist Church. Some of the family is buried at the Carr Family Cemetery located on land owned by the Ketcham family in Elamville. Evidence from these papers shows that they grew cotton, raised hogs, and also leased land to farmers including other family members. These papers include mention of several family members including George Washington (or G.W.) Carr, Thomas H. (also known as T.H.) Carr, Mrs. Leola Carr, and Edward Ketcham as well as sharecroppers like Joe Johnston, Ammie Jackson, Tullis Lunsford, Johnnie Capel, Bennie Reese and others.
Scope / Content Note: Collection documents the Carr Family's interaction with New Deal agencies like the Agricultural Adjustment Administration; land and mortgage records, tax records and receipts for property taxes, district school taxes and poll taxes. This collection also includes one personal letter from a relative working in San Francisco during World War II.Provenance: John J. Fallon acquired these papers during the late 1980's at a local antique market. Kathryn Castleman, his daughter, donated them to the The Wiregrass Archives.
